MODEL
Verb + 着 + Verb + 着, + New Event
Read the structure
Repeating an activity as V着V着 presents it as ongoing until a new, often unexpected event develops. The same verb appears twice, each followed by 着, and the following clause reports the change. This pattern does not merely mean doing something repeatedly; it creates a background process from which another situation emerges. Keep the model Verb + 着 + Verb + 着, + New Event visible while you compare each sentence.
她说着说着就哭起来了。
As she was talking, she started to cry.
Choose the right context
Show emotion emerging during speech: 她说着说着就哭起来了。 Show sleep arising during an activity: 我看着看着就睡着了。 Show escalation during interaction: 他们吵着吵着打起来了。
我躺在床上看电视,看着看着就睡着了。
I was watching television in bed and fell asleep as I watched.
Respect the boundary
Do not use two different verbs in the repeated A slots. Do not omit 着 after either occurrence of the repeated verb. Do not use the pattern when no continuing background activity or subsequent development is intended.
她说着听着就哭起来了。
(As she spoke and listened, she started crying.)
Repair the pattern
The second repeated verb is different from the first: The target A着A着 frame repeats the same background activity. Different verbs form another coordination, not this construction. 着 is omitted from the second repetition: Both occurrences of the repeated verb require 着: 看着看着.
她说着说着就哭起来了。
Use the repaired structure without changing the intended meaning.
