01 / PATTERN

See the Structure

MODEL

Subject + 偷偷(地) + Verb Phrase

Read the structure

偷偷 describes a deliberately concealed action performed without others noticing. It functions as a manner adverb before the action, optionally followed by 地. The form presupposes an intentional actor and cannot take aspect marking itself, split the action's verb and object, or serve as the main verb meaning to steal. Keep the model Subject + 偷偷(地) + Verb Phrase visible while you compare each sentence.

她偷偷离开了教室。

She quietly slipped out of the classroom.

Choose the right context

Use 偷偷 before an intentional action kept from notice. Add optional 地 before a longer action predicate. Use it when concealment, not theft, is the relevant manner.

我偷偷地把礼物放在桌上。

I secretly put the gift on the table.

Respect the boundary

Do not attach perfective 了 to the manner adverb. Do not insert 偷偷 between a verb and its object. Do not use adverbial 偷偷 for an event without an intentional actor.

她偷偷了离开教室。

(She secretly left the classroom.)

Repair the pattern

Perfective marker attaches to the manner adverb: Adverb 偷偷 cannot take 了; perfective marking follows the action verb. Manner adverb splits verb and object: 偷偷 modifies the full action and must precede 看; it cannot interrupt the verb and its event measure.

她偷偷离开了教室。

Use the repaired structure without changing the intended meaning.
