Read the structure
时A时B presents two contrasting states or behaviors as alternating from time to time. Each 时 introduces one parallel element, without claiming abruptness or a regular schedule. It commonly describes variable performance, length, mood, or weather. Both slots must concern the same topic and form a meaningful contrast on one dimension. Keep the model Subject + 时 + State A + 时 + State B visible while you compare each sentence.
他的成绩时好时坏。
His grades fluctuate between good and bad.
Choose the right context
Describe performance alternating between good and bad. Present sound, length, or mood as variable over time. State recurring contrast without specifying an exact schedule.
小鸟的叫声时长时短。
The bird's calls vary between long and short.
Respect the boundary
Do not omit the second 时. Do not use different subjects for A and B inside one compact pattern. Do not use it for one irreversible change from A to B.
他的成绩时好坏。
(His grades sometimes good bad.)
Repair the pattern
The second 时 is omitted: Each alternating state requires its own 时: 时好 and 时坏. Two subjects are forced into one compact alternation: 时A时B describes alternating states of one topic; separate subjects require full clauses with 有时.
他的成绩时好时坏。
Use the repaired structure without changing the intended meaning.
