Four Basic Chinese Question Types in Chinese
疑问句四类
Basic Chinese questions include yes-no questions with 吗, content questions with an in-place question word, alternative questions with 还是, and affirmative-negative questions such as 去不去 or 吃了没有. Each format supplies its own question marking, so learners should avoid combining two complete formats in one neutral question. The expected answer determines which format fits.

Read the structure
Basic Chinese questions include yes-no questions with 吗, content questions with an in-place question word, alternative questions with 还是, and affirmative-negative questions such as 去不去 or 吃了没有. Each format supplies its own question marking, so learners should avoid combining two complete formats in one neutral question. The expected answer determines which format fits. Keep the model Statement + 吗? / Question Word in Place? / A还是B? / A不A? visible while you compare each sentence.
他是老师吗?
Is he a teacher?
Choose the right context
Use 吗 to request a yes-or-no answer. Keep 谁 or 什么 in the position of the missing information. Use 还是 for alternatives and A不A for affirmative-negative choice.
你想买什么?
What do you want to buy?
Respect the boundary
Do not add 吗 to a complete question-word question. Do not add 吗 after an A-not-A form. Do not use 或者 for alternatives in a neutral direct question.
你想买什么吗?
(What do you want to buy?)
Repair the pattern
A question-word question redundantly adds 吗: 什么 already marks the requested information; adding neutral yes-no 吗 creates competing question formats. An affirmative-negative question redundantly adds 吗: 喝不喝 already presents the affirmative-negative alternatives, so final 吗 is redundant.
你想买什么?
Use the repaired structure without changing the intended meaning.
02 / MAP
Read the Sentence
Read from left to right and notice the job performed by each part. The labels describe this example; they are not a rule that every Chinese sentence must copy.

03 / EXAMPLES
Examples You Can Reuse
Keep the structure stable while changing the people, objects, times, or conditions. Pinyin is shown as reading support; use the Chinese sentence and translation to confirm the grammar relationship.
他是老师吗?
Is he a teacher?
你想买什么?
What do you want to buy?
你喝不喝牛奶?
Do you drink milk?
04 / LIMITS
When to Use It — and When Not To
Use it when
- Use 吗 to request a yes-or-no answer.
- Keep 谁 or 什么 in the position of the missing information.
- Use 还是 for alternatives and A不A for affirmative-negative choice.
Do not use it when
- Do not add 吗 to a complete question-word question.
- Do not add 吗 after an A-not-A form.
- Do not use 或者 for alternatives in a neutral direct question.
05 / REPAIR
Compare Right and Wrong
Compare the smallest meaningful change. Each explanation identifies a placement, scope, form, or clause relationship instead of treating the whole sentence as one undifferentiated mistake.
你想买什么吗?
你想买什么?
A question-word question redundantly adds 吗
什么 already marks the requested information; adding neutral yes-no 吗 creates competing question formats.
你喝不喝牛奶吗?
你喝不喝牛奶?
An affirmative-negative question redundantly adds 吗
喝不喝 already presents the affirmative-negative alternatives, so final 吗 is redundant.
你想买什么吗?
什么 already marks the requested information; adding neutral yes-no 吗 creates competing question formats.
你喝不喝牛奶吗?
喝不喝 already presents the affirmative-negative alternatives, so final 吗 is redundant.
06 / PRACTICE
Practice the Grammar Point
Complete three short tasks in order: judge the pattern, repair a common error, and build the sentence. Feedback is fixed and reviewed, so these activities do not use a checker allowance.
1. Judge the sentence
2. Choose the correction
3. Build the sentence
Build a complete sentence with 疑问句四类.
07 / APPLY
Apply It in Your Sentence
Write one original sentence with 疑问句四类. Your draft moves to the checker through this browser session, selects this grammar point as the first review focus, and waits for you to submit.
08 / QUESTIONS
Four Basic Chinese Question Types Questions
Can 呢 appear in these questions?
It can occur in several contextual question types, but it does not replace the core structure taught here.
Why is 还是 used instead of 或者?
Neutral direct alternative questions normally use 还是; 或者 usually coordinates alternatives in statements.
