Progressive Sentence Groups in Chinese

递进复句 dìjìn fùjù

A progressive sentence group presents a second fact as stronger, newer, or more important than the first. Chinese may leave the relation unmarked, or use 更、还、不但……而且…… to make the increase explicit. The second clause must add force rather than merely repeat information.

01 / PATTERN

See the Structure

MODEL

Clause 1,(更/还/不但) + Clause 2

Read the structure

A progressive sentence group presents a second fact as stronger, newer, or more important than the first. Chinese may leave the relation unmarked, or use 更、还、不但……而且…… to make the increase explicit. The second clause must add force rather than merely repeat information. Keep the model Clause 1,(更/还/不但) + Clause 2 visible while you compare each sentence.

昨天很冷,今天更冷了。

Yesterday was cold, and today is even colder.

Choose the right context

Add a stronger degree or more important fact. Use 更 or 还 to signal escalation. Use 不但……而且…… for an explicit progressive relation.

班长学习很好,还经常帮助同学。

The class monitor studies well and also often helps classmates.

Respect the boundary

Do not label simple parallel facts as progressive. Do not use 更 without a meaningful comparison or increase. Do not assume 而且 is required when the relation is recoverable from context.

他喜欢茶,喜欢咖啡。

(He likes tea, likes coffee.)

Repair the pattern

A parallel fact is called progressive without escalation: The original pair is parallel; 也 is appropriate unless the second fact is presented as stronger. 更 is added without a comparison: 更 marks increased degree, while 还 expresses addition when no comparative scale is intended.

他喜欢茶,也喜欢咖啡。

Use the repaired structure without changing the intended meaning.

02 / MAP

Read the Sentence

Read from left to right and notice the job performed by each part. The labels describe this example; they are not a rule that every Chinese sentence must copy.

Examples You Can Reuse

04 / LIMITS

When to Use It — and When Not To

Use it when

  • Add a stronger degree or more important fact.
  • Use 更 or 还 to signal escalation.
  • Use 不但……而且…… for an explicit progressive relation.

Do not use it when

  • Do not label simple parallel facts as progressive.
  • Do not use 更 without a meaningful comparison or increase.
  • Do not assume 而且 is required when the relation is recoverable from context.

05 / REPAIR

Compare Right and Wrong

Compare the smallest meaningful change. Each explanation identifies a placement, scope, form, or clause relationship instead of treating the whole sentence as one undifferentiated mistake.

他喜欢茶,喜欢咖啡。

他喜欢茶,也喜欢咖啡。

A parallel fact is called progressive without escalation

The original pair is parallel; 也 is appropriate unless the second fact is presented as stronger.

他更有一本书。

他还有一本书。

更 is added without a comparison

更 marks increased degree, while 还 expresses addition when no comparative scale is intended.

他喜欢茶,喜欢咖啡。

Tā xǐhuan chá, xǐhuan kāfēi.

06 / PRACTICE

Practice the Grammar Point

Complete three short tasks in order: judge the pattern, repair a common error, and build the sentence. Feedback is fixed and reviewed, so these activities do not use a checker allowance.

1. Judge the sentence

Question 11/1
Which sentence uses 递进复句 correctly?

2. Choose the correction

Question 11/1
Choose the correction that fixes: 他更有一本书。

3. Build the sentence

Build a complete sentence with 递进复句.

07 / APPLY

Apply It in Your Sentence

Write one original sentence with 递进复句. Your draft moves to the checker through this browser session, selects this grammar point as the first review focus, and waits for you to submit.

08 / QUESTIONS

Progressive Sentence Groups Questions

Can a progressive relation omit a connective?

Yes. Context can make the increase clear, as in 昨天很冷,今天更冷了. Connectives make the relation more explicit.

Is 不但……而且…… always stronger in the second clause?

It conventionally presents the second fact as an added or stronger point, but the exact emphasis depends on context and prosody.
