Ordering Multiple Adverbials in Chinese
多项状语语序
When several adverbials modify one predicate, Mandarin normally orders them from broader setting to narrower manner: time and place precede scope, degree, and descriptive manner. Not every sentence contains every slot, but each complete phrase should stay intact before the verb it modifies rather than being scattered after it.

Read the structure
When several adverbials modify one predicate, Mandarin normally orders them from broader setting to narrower manner: time and place precede scope, degree, and descriptive manner. Not every sentence contains every slot, but each complete phrase should stay intact before the verb it modifies rather than being scattered after it. Keep the model Subject + Time + Place + Scope / Degree + Manner + Verb visible while you compare each sentence.
他昨天在教室里认真地写完了作业。
He carefully finished his homework in the classroom yesterday.
Choose the right context
Combine time, place, and manner: 他昨天在教室里认真地写作业。 Place a purpose phrase before the time and setting: 她为了考试昨天在家复习。 Keep a prepositional target phrase before the main verb: 大家对报告进行了讨论。
她为了通过考试昨天在家复习了一整天。
To pass the exam, she reviewed at home all day yesterday.
Respect the boundary
Do not place a descriptive manner phrase after a completed verb-object phrase. Do not split a preposition from its object while rearranging several adverbials. Do not treat the template as absolute when discourse focus licenses a marked initial phrase.
他昨天在教室里写完了作业认真地。
(He yesterday in the classroom finished the homework carefully.)
Repair the pattern
The descriptive manner adverbial is stranded after the object: 认真地 modifies 写完 and must stand before that verb phrase; it cannot trail the completed object 作业. The place preposition is separated from its object: 在 must remain with its place object 会议室里. The separate manner phrase 认真地 follows the complete place phrase.
他昨天在教室里认真地写完了作业。
Use the repaired structure without changing the intended meaning.

Compare Right and Wrong
Compare the smallest meaningful change. Each explanation identifies a placement, scope, form, or clause relationship instead of treating the whole sentence as one undifferentiated mistake.

08 / QUESTIONS
Ordering Multiple Adverbials Questions
Must every sentence follow one rigid adverbial formula?
No. The sequence is a neutral default, and discourse focus can move a whole phrase. Constituents such as 在会议室里 must still remain grammatically intact.
Where does a manner adverbial with 地 go?
It normally stands close to and before the verb it modifies, after broader time and place settings.
