就 (jiù) vs 才 (cái) in Chinese

就 and 才 both comment on timing, in opposite directions. 就 says something happened early, soon, or easily (他八点就来了 — he came as early as 8). 才 says it happened late, or only after effort or conditions (他九点才来 — he didn't come until 9). Same clock, opposite feeling.

STRUCTURE

就 early or soon, 才 late or only then

When to use 就/才 — and when not

Use it when

  • 就 for "as early as / right away": 我马上就来。
  • 才 for "not until / only then": 他昨天才知道。
  • 才 after a condition — "only then": 说了三遍他才懂。

Don't use it when

  • Treating 才 + 了 as always wrong — 了 can appear with quantities, duration, or a new situation; learn the meaning of the whole sentence。
  • 就 for "not until" (late) — that reverses the meaning; use 才: 九点才来。
  • Putting them after the verb — both are adverbs and sit before it.

Right vs. wrong

他九点就才来。

他九点才来。

就 and 才 stacked for one timing meaning

就 and 才 express opposite viewpoints and cannot be stacked here. To say "not until 9", choose 才: 他九点才来。

他来九点才。

他九点才来。

才 placed after the time and verb

才 is an adverb and belongs before the verb, while the time phrase comes earlier. Put the sequence in the order time + 才 + verb: 他九点才来。

就 (jiù) vs 才 (cái) FAQ

What is the difference between 就 and 才?

就 = early / soon / easily (八点就来 — came as early as 8). 才 = late / only then / after effort (九点才来 — didn't come until 9). Same time, opposite attitude.

Can 才 be used with 了?

Sometimes. 他九点才来 is the basic "not until 9" pattern, but 了 can appear when the sentence adds a quantity, duration, or new situation, such as 他才来了两天. Do not judge 才 + 了 without context.

How do I say "right away / as soon as"?

就: 我马上就来 (I'll come right away), 说完就走 (leave right after finishing). For "not until", switch to 才.
