MODEL

哈哈,Clause / 哈哈 + 地 + Laughing Verb / 哈哈的 + 声音

Read the structure

哈哈 imitates laughter and can also function as an interjection expressing delight or satisfaction. It may stand at the beginning of an utterance, modify a laughing verb with 地, or modify 声音 with 的. These functions share the same sound but require different surrounding structures and punctuation. Keep the model 哈哈,Clause / 哈哈 + 地 + Laughing Verb / 哈哈的 + 声音 visible while you compare each sentence.

哈哈,我猜到了!

Haha, I guessed it!

Choose the right context

Represent the audible sound of laughter. Open a response with an immediate amused reaction. Modify a laughing action or the noun 声音 with the appropriate marker.

听了他的话,我们都哈哈地笑了起来。

After hearing him, we all burst out laughing.

Respect the boundary

Do not omit 的 before 声音 in the attributive pattern. Do not place 地 after the laughing verb it modifies. Do not treat every occurrence as a sentence-final particle.

我听到同学们哈哈声音了。

(I heard the students haha sound.)

Repair the pattern

The attributive marker before 声音 is omitted: When 哈哈 modifies the noun 声音, the attributive marker 的 is required. The adverbial marker follows the verb: The adverbial phrase 哈哈地 must come before the verb 笑.

我听到同学们哈哈的声音了。

Use the repaired structure without changing the intended meaning.

哈哈 as Laughter Sound and Interjection Questions

Is 哈哈 an interjection or an onomatopoeia?

Why does 哈哈 sometimes take 的 and sometimes 地?

Use 的 before a noun such as 声音 and 地 before a verb such as 笑. A standalone interjection needs neither.
