跟...一样...: Equal Comparison in Chinese

A 跟/和 B 一样…… A gēn/hé B yíyàng...

跟...一样... compares A and B as identical or equal in a stated quality. 跟 or 和 introduces B, and 一样 follows the complete B phrase. An adjective after 一样 names the shared degree; without one, the sentence says the two items are the same more generally.

01 / PATTERN

See the Structure

MODEL

A + 跟 / 和 + B + 一样 (+ Adjective)

Read the structure

跟...一样... compares A and B as identical or equal in a stated quality. 跟 or 和 introduces B, and 一样 follows the complete B phrase. An adjective after 一样 names the shared degree; without one, the sentence says the two items are the same more generally. Keep the model A + 跟 / 和 + B + 一样 (+ Adjective) visible while you compare each sentence.

这本书跟那本书一样。

This book is the same as that book.

Choose the right context

Say two items are the same: 这本书跟那本书一样。 Say two people share a degree: 弟弟跟哥哥一样高。 Use 和 as the linker in the same comparison: 今天和昨天一样冷。

弟弟跟哥哥一样高。

The younger brother is as tall as the older brother.

Respect the boundary

Do not place 一样 before B; it follows the complete 跟/和 + B phrase. Do not move 跟 or 和 after 一样. Use 比 for a greater-than comparison or 不如/没有 when A is less than B.

我跟一样姐姐高。

(I with equally older sister tall.)

Repair the pattern

一样 is placed before the reference noun introduced by 跟: The comparison first forms 跟姐姐; 一样 then follows that complete reference phrase before the shared quality 高. The linker 跟 is moved after 一样: 跟 must introduce B before 一样. Reversing the two elements leaves the equal-comparison structure incomplete.

我跟姐姐一样高。

Use the repaired structure without changing the intended meaning.
