Read the structure
该 and 应该 precede an action or state judged advisable, expected, or morally appropriate. 该 is common and compact; 应该 is more explicit. Their negative is usually 不该 or 不应该, with negation before the modal, because the judgment itself is being denied. Keep the model Subject + 该/应该 + Verb Phrase visible while you compare each sentence.
你应该早点睡觉。
You should go to bed earlier.
Choose the right context
Use 应该 before an action to give moderate advice. Use 该 before a predicate for a concise judgment about what is due. Use 不应该 or 不该 to say an action is inadvisable.
我该回家了。
I should go home now.
Respect the boundary
Do not place 该 or 应该 after the verb phrase it governs. Do not put 不 after 应该 when denying the obligation itself. Do not use 应该 for an unavoidable requirement when 必须 is intended.
你早点睡应该觉。
(You should go to bed earlier.)
Repair the pattern
Modal splits a fixed verb-object expression: 应该 belongs before the predicate 早点睡觉; it cannot split the fixed verb-object expression 睡觉. Two equivalent modals stacked: 应该 already supplies the advice meaning; adding synonymous modal 该 immediately after it redundantly occupies the same slot.
你应该早点睡觉。
Use the repaired structure without changing the intended meaning.
