Existential Sentences of Appearance and Disappearance in Chinese
存现句表出现与消失
This existential pattern presents an entity as appearing in or disappearing from a scene. A place or time phrase establishes the setting, an appearance or disappearance verb follows, and the introduced entity normally comes last. The postverbal noun is typically new or indefinite information, so the construction organizes a scene differently from an ordinary subject-first event sentence.

Read the structure
This existential pattern presents an entity as appearing in or disappearing from a scene. A place or time phrase establishes the setting, an appearance or disappearance verb follows, and the introduced entity normally comes last. The postverbal noun is typically new or indefinite information, so the construction organizes a scene differently from an ordinary subject-first event sentence. Keep the model Place or Time + Verb + Appearing or Disappearing Entity visible while you compare each sentence.
门口走进来一位老师。
A teacher walked in through the doorway.
Choose the right context
Introduce someone or something entering a scene. Report that an entity has disappeared from a location. Present new scene information after a setting phrase.
天上飞来一架飞机。
An airplane came flying into the sky.
Respect the boundary
Do not put the introduced entity before the setting in the core pattern. Do not place the appearance verb after its new entity. Do not add an unsupported existential 有 after a complete appearance predicate.
前边一辆车开来了有。
(Ahead a car drove up have.)
Repair the pattern
An existential marker is stranded after the predicate: The setting precedes the appearance verb and new entity; a final 有 has no grammatical role in this completed pattern. The directional ending is duplicated: The directional complement 出来 is already complete and cannot take an extra 来.
前边开来了一辆车。
Use the repaired structure without changing the intended meaning.

08 / QUESTIONS
Existential Sentences of Appearance and Disappearance Questions
Must the final noun be indefinite?
It is commonly new or indefinite because the sentence introduces it into the discourse, though context can affect definiteness.
Is every place-first sentence existential?
No. The characteristic order and the scene-presenting meaning must occur together.
