Directional Complements with State Meanings in Chinese
下来 / 下去 / 起来 / 过来(状态义)
Directional complements can extend from physical motion to changes or continuations of state. 下来 often marks settling into a stable state, 下去 its continuation, 起来 emergence or concealment, and 过来 recovery toward normal awareness. These are conventional semantic extensions, so the selected predicate and context determine which complement fits.

Read the structure
Directional complements can extend from physical motion to changes or continuations of state. 下来 often marks settling into a stable state, 下去 its continuation, 起来 emergence or concealment, and 过来 recovery toward normal awareness. These are conventional semantic extensions, so the selected predicate and context determine which complement fits. Keep the model Verb or Adjective + 下来 / 下去 / 起来 / 过来 visible while you compare each sentence.

Choose the right context
Mark a state becoming settled with 下来. Present a state continuing with 下去. Describe onset, concealment, or recovery with an established complement.

This color will gradually fade.
Respect the boundary
Do not move the complement before its predicate. Do not split the two-syllable complement around unrelated material. Do not assume every adjective combines naturally with every directional complement.
同学们很快下来安静了。
(The students down became quiet.)
Repair the pattern
The complement precedes its state predicate: The state predicate 安静 must come before the result-like complement 下来. The two-syllable complement is split: 过来 is one directional complement here and cannot be separated by an adverb.
同学们很快安静下来了。
Use the repaired structure without changing the intended meaning.

08 / QUESTIONS
Directional Complements with State Meanings Questions
Do these complements always express movement?
No. They often develop abstract state meanings, such as becoming quiet, continuing to fade, or recovering consciousness.
Can any verb take any of the four complements?
No. Lexical compatibility and the intended state contour matter, so learners should study established combinations.
