除非...才 (Only If...Then...) in Chinese
除非…才
除非...才... presents a condition as necessary for the result: without that condition, the result does not hold. 除非 introduces the required condition, and 才 marks the dependent result. Do not confuse this positive-result frame with 除非...否则/不然..., which states what happens when the condition is not met.

Read the structure

Choose the right context
To state a necessary condition for an action: 除非雨停了，我们才出发。 To limit permission to one stated condition: 除非本人同意，才可以公开这份材料。 To explain what must happen before a result becomes possible: 除非你认真准备，才有可能通过考试。

Respect the boundary
For a sufficient condition; use 只要...就... when meeting the condition is enough to bring about the result. For the consequence of not meeting a condition; use the separate frame 除非...否则/不然.... Do not assume the stated condition guarantees the result. This frame presents it as necessary, not automatically sufficient.
除非才雨停了，我们出发。
(Only if the rain stops, we will set out.)
Repair the pattern
除非 and 才 are stacked before the condition: 除非 introduces the condition, while 才 belongs in the result clause. Keep the two markers with their respective clauses. 才 and 否则 are stacked as one result marker: 才 introduces the result possible under the stated condition. 否则 introduces what follows when that condition is not met, so 才否则 is not a combined marker.
除非雨停了，我们才出发。

What logical relation does 除非...才... express?
The clause after 除非 gives a necessary condition for the result after 才. If that condition is absent, the stated result does not hold; meeting it does not by itself guarantee the result.
Is 除非...否则... also correct?
Yes, but it organizes the meaning differently. 除非 A，才 B states the result available under A; 除非 A，否则 C states the consequence when A is not met.
Is 除非...才... the same as 只要...就...?
No. 除非...才... presents a necessary condition. 只要...就... normally presents a sufficient condition: satisfying it is enough for the result in the stated context.
