除非...才 (Only If...Then...) in Chinese
除非...才... presents a condition as necessary for the result: without that condition, the result does not hold. 除非 introduces the required condition, and 才 marks the dependent result. Do not confuse this positive-result frame with 除非...否则/不然..., which states what happens when the condition is not met.

When to use 除非…才 — and when not
Use it when
- To state a necessary condition for an action: 除非雨停了，我们才出发。
- To limit permission to one stated condition: 除非本人同意，才可以公开这份材料。
- To explain what must happen before a result becomes possible: 除非你认真准备，才有可能通过考试。
Don't use it when
- For a sufficient condition; use 只要...就... when meeting the condition is enough to bring about the result.
- For the consequence of not meeting a condition; use the separate frame 除非...否则/不然....
- Do not assume the stated condition guarantees the result. This frame presents it as necessary, not automatically sufficient.
Right vs. wrong
除非才雨停了，我们出发。
除非雨停了，我们才出发。
除非 and 才 are stacked before the condition
除非 introduces the condition, while 才 belongs in the result clause. Keep the two markers with their respective clauses.
除非雨停了，才否则我们出发。
除非雨停了，我们才出发。
才 and 否则 are stacked as one result marker
才 introduces the result possible under the stated condition. 否则 introduces what follows when that condition is not met, so 才否则 is not a combined marker.

除非雨停了，我们才出发。
Chúfēi yǔ tíng le, wǒmen cái chūfā.
We will set out only if the rain stops.
除非你认真准备，才有可能通过考试。
Chúfēi nǐ rènzhēn zhǔnbèi, cái yǒu kěnéng tōngguò kǎoshì.
Only if you prepare carefully is passing the exam possible.
除非本人同意，才可以公开这份材料。
Chúfēi běnrén tóngyì, cái kěyǐ gōngkāi zhè fèn cáiliào.
This material may be made public only with the person's consent.
这个问题除非老师说明，我们才会明白。
Zhège wèntí chúfēi lǎoshī shuōmíng, wǒmen cái huì míngbai.
We will understand this issue only if the teacher explains it.
除非他亲自来，我才把材料交给他。
Chúfēi tā qīnzì lái, wǒ cái bǎ cáiliào jiāo gěi tā.
I will give him the material only if he comes in person.
除非坐飞机去，否则肯定来不及了。
Chúfēi zuò fēijī qù, fǒuzé kěndìng láibují le.
Unless we fly, we definitely will not make it in time.
Common mistakes
除非才雨停了，我们出发。
Chúfēi cái yǔ tíng le, wǒmen chūfā.
Put 除非 with the condition and 才 with the result: 除非雨停了，我们才出发。
除非雨停了，才否则我们出发。
Chúfēi yǔ tíng le, cái fǒuzé wǒmen chūfā.
Do not combine 才 and 否则. For the intended positive result, say 除非雨停了，我们才出发。

What logical relation does 除非...才... express?
The clause after 除非 gives a necessary condition for the result after 才. If that condition is absent, the stated result does not hold; meeting it does not by itself guarantee the result.
Is 除非...否则... also correct?
Yes, but it organizes the meaning differently. 除非 A，才 B states the result available under A; 除非 A，否则 C states the consequence when A is not met.
Is 除非...才... the same as 只要...就...?
No. 除非...才... presents a necessary condition. 只要...就... normally presents a sufficient condition: satisfying it is enough for the result in the stated context.
