不由得: Unable to Help Reacting in Chinese

不由得 bùyóude

不由得 introduces an involuntary emotional, physical, or mental reaction: the subject cannot help doing it. The fixed expression precedes the reaction verb and cannot be split. It overlaps with 不禁; 不由得 can also foreground bodily or action responses beyond the subject's control, but that tendency is not a categorical division.

01 / PATTERN

See the Structure

MODEL

Subject + 不由得 + Involuntary reaction

Read the structure

不由得 introduces an involuntary emotional, physical, or mental reaction: the subject cannot help doing it. The fixed expression precedes the reaction verb and cannot be split. It overlaps with 不禁; 不由得 can also foreground bodily or action responses beyond the subject's control, but that tendency is not a categorical division. Keep the model Subject + 不由得 + Involuntary reaction visible while you compare each sentence.

看着父亲的手,我不由得流下眼泪。

Looking at Father's hands, I could not help shedding tears.

Choose the right context

Describe an uncontrollable emotional reaction. Describe a spontaneous physical response. Introduce an automatic thought or memory triggered by context.

听到这个笑话,大家不由得笑了。

Hearing the joke, everyone could not help laughing.

Respect the boundary

Do not split 不由得 around the reaction verb. Do not use it for a deliberate planned action. Do not confuse it with the prohibition 不得.

我不由流泪得。

(I not by shed-tears de.)

Repair the pattern

The reaction splits the fixed expression: 不由得 is one fixed adverb and must remain intact before the reaction. 不由得 follows the reaction: 不由得 modifies the following involuntary reaction and cannot trail it.

我不由得流下眼泪。

Use the repaired structure without changing the intended meaning.

08 / QUESTIONS

不由得: Unable to Help Reacting Questions

How is 不由得 different from 不得不?

不由得 marks an involuntary reaction; 不得不 marks an action someone has no choice but to perform.

How is 不由得 different from 不禁?

They strongly overlap. 不禁 is especially common with literary emotional or mental reactions, while 不由得 can also foreground bodily or action responses; context, not an absolute rule, decides.
