不X不知道,一X…… contrasts ignorance before an action with a striking discovery once the same action is performed. The verb is echoed across the two clauses, while 就 may introduce the discovered result but can be omitted. The spoken pattern often highlights surprise; the result itself need not always be negative. Keep the model 不 + Verb + 不知道,一 + Same Verb + (就) + Discovery visible while you compare each sentence.
不看不知道,一看吓一跳。
You do not know until you look; one look gives you a shock.
Choose the right context
Contrast not knowing with discovery after direct experience. Highlight a surprising result revealed by looking, asking, or doing. Repeat the same action in negative and realized clauses.
这题看起来简单,不做不知道,一做真不会。
The problem looks easy, but only doing it reveals how difficult it is.
Respect the boundary
Do not reverse 不知道 into 知道不. Do not place 一 after the repeated verb. Do not require 就 before every result.
不看知道不,一看吓一跳。
(Not look know not, one look startled.)
Repair the pattern
不知道 is reversed: The first clause keeps the fixed negative result 不知道 after the negated action. 一 follows the repeated verb: 一 precedes the repeated verb to introduce the realized action and its discovery.
不看不知道,一看吓一跳。
Use the repaired structure without changing the intended meaning.
