MODEL
Event or condition,subject + 便 + following action/result
Read the structure
便 links a preceding event or circumstance to a following action or result, often presenting the transition as prompt, natural, or expected. In this sequencing use, 便 appears before the second predicate and is more literary or concise than everyday 就. It does not itself mark completed aspect or supply a missing predicate. Keep the model Event or condition, subject + 便 + following action/result visible while you compare each sentence.
我一走出校门,便看见了她。
As soon as I left the school gate, I saw her.
Choose the right context
Connect an earlier event to a prompt or natural following action. Use 便 before the predicate of the second event. Choose it when a concise or somewhat written register suits the context.
她放下电话,便出发去医院。
She put down the phone and promptly left for the hospital.
Respect the boundary
Do not attach the aspect particle 了 directly to 便. Do not use it without a following predicate in this sequencing pattern. Do not assume it is interchangeable with every lexical meaning of 便.
我一到家,便了吃饭。
(As soon as I got home, I ate.)
Repair the pattern
Attaching 了 to 便: Sequencing 便 is an adverb before the second predicate. It cannot take the aspect particle 了. Placing 便 after the second predicate: 便 must precede the following action it links to the first event: 便出发, not 出发便.
我一到家,便吃饭。
Use the repaired structure without changing the intended meaning.

08 / QUESTIONS
便 for a Prompt Sequence Questions
What is the difference between 便 and 就 in a sequence?
Both can link an earlier event to a following result. Sequencing 便 is often more concise or written, while 就 is more common across everyday speech and has additional uses.
Does 便 always mean immediately?
No. It can present the second event as prompt, natural, or expected from the first; the exact timing comes from context rather than from 便 alone.
