01 / PATTERN

See the Structure

MODEL

自 + A + 自 + B

Read the structure

自A自B forms compact parallel expressions in which each 自 introduces one coordinated action or state, often conveying independent, self-directed, or mutually separate conduct. Both 自 slots and their following elements must remain balanced; aspect cannot interrupt the four-part frame. Keep the model 自 + A + 自 + B visible while you compare each sentence.

He sat in the corner talking to himself.

Choose the right context

Use established 自A自B expressions for self-directed conduct. Choose attested balanced combinations rather than inventing mismatched slots. Keep A and B grammatically parallel. Preserve both 自 markers in the four-part frame.

He brought this upon himself.

Respect the boundary

Do not omit the second 自. Do not insert aspect inside the frame. Do not place an object between 自 and its A or B slot.

(He sat in the corner talking to himself.)

Repair the pattern

Aspect marker splits the parallel frame: 自说自话 is an intact four-part expression and cannot contain aspect 了. Second self marker omitted: The fixed parallel expression requires the second 自 before B: 自作自受.

Use the repaired structure without changing the intended meaning.
