正好 for Exact Fit or Fortuitous Coincidence in Chinese

正好 zhènghǎo

正好 marks an exact fit in time, amount, or circumstances, and it can introduce a fortunate coincidence: something happens to match what is needed. It normally comes before the predicate or quantity it evaluates. Context decides whether the reading is exactly or as it happens; it does not itself mean immediately.

01 / PATTERN

See the Structure

MODEL

Subject + 正好 + predicate / amount

Read the structure

正好 marks an exact fit in time, amount, or circumstances, and it can introduce a fortunate coincidence: something happens to match what is needed. It normally comes before the predicate or quantity it evaluates. Context decides whether the reading is exactly or as it happens; it does not itself mean immediately. Keep the model Subject + 正好 + predicate / amount visible while you compare each sentence.

我正好有一张票。

As it happens, I have a ticket.

Choose the right context

Show that a time, amount, or condition fits exactly. Introduce a useful coincidence that matches the current situation. Place 正好 before the predicate or quantity receiving the exact-fit reading.

这双鞋正好合适。

These shoes fit exactly.

Respect the boundary

Do not use it merely to say that an event happened recently. Do not place it after the object when it is meant to modify the whole predicate. Do not reverse the fixed two-syllable adverb.

我有一张票正好。

(As it happens, I have a ticket.)

Repair the pattern

Putting 正好 after its completed predicate: The coincidence adverb scopes over 有一张票 and therefore belongs before that predicate. Reversing the fixed adverb: 正好 is a fixed adverb. 好正 does not express an exact time or convenient coincidence.

我正好有一张票。

Use the repaired structure without changing the intended meaning.

08 / QUESTIONS

正好 for Exact Fit or Fortuitous Coincidence Questions

How is 正好 different from 刚好 or 恰好?

All three can mark an exact fit or coincidence. Their register and preferred contexts differ, so the related lesson compares their overlap more closely.

Does 正好 mean just now?

No. 正好 evaluates fit or coincidence; 刚才 and 刚 are used for recent time or a recently completed event.
