因…而…: Formal Cause Framing in Chinese

因……而…… yīn...ér...

因…而… frames a cause inside a formal sentence and links it to the resulting state or action with 而. The cause follows 因 and the result follows 而. This paired frame is especially common in written evaluation; neither marker takes aspect, and 而 cannot trail the completed result predicate.

01 / PATTERN

See the Structure

MODEL

Subject + 因 + Cause + 而 + Result predicate

Read the structure

因…而… frames a cause inside a formal sentence and links it to the resulting state or action with 而. The cause follows 因 and the result follows 而. This paired frame is especially common in written evaluation; neither marker takes aspect, and 而 cannot trail the completed result predicate. Keep the model Subject + 因 + Cause + 而 + Result predicate visible while you compare each sentence.

他因获得认可而感到欣慰。

He felt relieved because he received recognition.

Choose the right context

Link a stated cause to a resulting feeling or action. Use a compact causal frame in formal prose. Keep one subject while contrasting cause and resulting predicate.

比赛因大雨而延期。

The match was postponed because of heavy rain.

Respect the boundary

Do not attach 了 to 因 or 而. Do not put 而 after the completed result. Do not omit the cause after 因.

比赛因了大雨而延期。

(The match because-le heavy rain was postponed.)

Repair the pattern

了 is attached to the cause marker: 因 is a cause preposition and cannot take the aspect particle 了. 而 follows the result it should introduce: 而 introduces the result predicate 延期 and therefore must precede it.

比赛因大雨而延期。

Use the repaired structure without changing the intended meaning.

04 / LIMITS

When to Use It — and When Not To

Use it when

  • Link a stated cause to a resulting feeling or action.
  • Use a compact causal frame in formal prose.
  • Keep one subject while contrasting cause and resulting predicate.

Do not use it when

  • Do not attach 了 to 因 or 而.
  • Do not put 而 after the completed result.
  • Do not omit the cause after 因.

05 / REPAIR

Compare Right and Wrong

Compare the smallest meaningful change. Each explanation identifies a placement, scope, form, or clause relationship instead of treating the whole sentence as one undifferentiated mistake.

08 / QUESTIONS

因…而…: Formal Cause Framing Questions

How is 因…而… different from 因为…所以…?

因…而… is more compact and formal, often keeping cause and result inside one written sentence.

Can 而 be omitted?

Some causal sentences permit other structures, but this card teaches the explicit paired frame.
