唯独: The Sole Exception in Chinese

唯独 wéidú

唯独 singles out one person, object, or circumstance as the sole exception to a broader pattern. It stands immediately before the focused exception or before that exception's predicate when the referent is already clear. The surrounding context must establish a contrasting set; otherwise the exclusive focus has nothing to exclude.

01 / PATTERN

See the Structure

MODEL

General set, 唯独 + Exception + Predicate

Read the structure

唯独 singles out one person, object, or circumstance as the sole exception to a broader pattern. It stands immediately before the focused exception or before that exception's predicate when the referent is already clear. The surrounding context must establish a contrasting set; otherwise the exclusive focus has nothing to exclude. Keep the model General set, 唯独 + Exception + Predicate visible while you compare each sentence.

全班都在听讲,唯独他在睡觉。

The whole class was listening except him, who was sleeping.

Choose the right context

Single out one exception after a general statement. Contrast one member's behavior with the rest of a group. Focus one uniquely affected object or circumstance.

他什么都不怕,唯独怕蛇。

He fears nothing except snakes.

Respect the boundary

Do not use 唯独 without an understood comparison set. Do not place it after the exceptional predicate. Do not combine 唯独 with 都 over the same focused exception.

大家都同意,经理反对唯独。

(Everyone agreed; the manager opposed solely.)

Repair the pattern

唯独 follows the exceptional predicate: 唯独 must introduce the exceptional member or its predicate, not follow the completed clause. 了 is attached to the focus adverb: 唯独 is an invariant focus adverb and cannot take aspect 了.

大家都同意,唯独经理反对。

Use the repaired structure without changing the intended meaning.
