MODEL
顺着 + Path/Direction + Motion Predicate
Read the structure
顺着 introduces the path, direction, physical feature, or unfolding line that an action follows. It precedes its nominal object, and the complete prepositional phrase comes before the motion or observation predicate. The particle 着 belongs to 顺着 here; aspect or clause material cannot split this preposition from its object. Keep the model 顺着 + Path/Direction + Motion Predicate visible while you compare each sentence.
我们顺着山路往上走。
We walked upward along the mountain road.
Choose the right context
Use 顺着 before a road, river, wall, or other path. Use it before the motion predicate following that path. Use it figuratively for following a line of reasoning when context permits.
他顺着河岸跑了两公里。
He ran two kilometers along the riverbank.
Respect the boundary
Do not insert aspect between 顺 and 着. Do not put the path noun before 顺着. Do not strand the path phrase after the destination object.
我们顺了着山路往上走。
(We walked upward along the mountain road.)
Repair the pattern
Aspect marker splits the preposition: 顺着 is the intact path preposition; perfective 了 cannot split it. Aspect marker splits the path noun: 顺着 must govern the intact path noun 河岸; aspect 了 cannot split that object.
我们顺着山路往上走。
Use the repaired structure without changing the intended meaning.
