01 / PATTERN

See the Structure

MODEL

Cause/evidence,怪不得 + formerly surprising result; 怪不得 + result,原来 + cause

Read the structure

Adverbial 怪不得 marks the speaker's realization that a previously surprising fact now makes sense after discovering its cause. The cause may appear before it or later with 原来. Distinguish this inferential use from verbal 怪不得 meaning cannot blame, which takes a person or matter as its object and makes a different judgment. Keep the model Cause/evidence,怪不得 + formerly surprising result; 怪不得 + result,原来 + cause visible while you compare each sentence.

原来你住过北京,怪不得汉语说得这么好。

So you lived in Beijing—no wonder your Chinese is so good.

Choose the right context

Show that new evidence resolves an earlier surprise or puzzle. Place 怪不得 before the result that is now understood. Use 原来 to introduce a newly discovered cause when it follows the result.

怪不得他今天没来,原来他病了。

No wonder he did not come today; it turns out he was ill.

Respect the boundary

Do not confuse inferential 怪不得 with the verb meaning cannot blame. Do not use it for a cause that the speaker still considers unexplained. Do not insert 得 or an aspect particle inside the fixed adverbial form.

怪不得得他今天没来,原来他病了。

(No wonder he did not come today; he was ill.)

Repair the pattern

Inserting 得 after the fixed marker: Inferential 怪不得 is a fixed adverbial unit directly before the result clause. An extra 得 cannot follow it. Moving the subject after the completed predicate: The subject of the understood result precedes its time phrase and predicate: 他今天没来.

怪不得他今天没来,原来他病了。

Use the repaired structure without changing the intended meaning.

Compare Right and Wrong

怪不得他今天没来,原来他病了。

Inserting 得 after the fixed marker

Inferential 怪不得 is a fixed adverbial unit directly before the result clause. An extra 得 cannot follow it.

Moving the subject after the completed predicate

The subject of the understood result precedes its time phrase and predicate: 他今天没来.

Guàibude de tā jīntiān méi lái, yuánlái tā bìng le.

Use the fixed marker 怪不得 directly before the result clause.
